Cope
‘Cope’ is a community-based mental health and psychosocial support program designed to support refugees and asylum seekers displaced in Indonesia. Our aim is to overcome barriers to mental health support by providing a low-cost, accessible, peer-driven psychosocial support to all refugee community members.
Our innovative task-shifting approach increases refugee skills and knowledge, overcomes obstacles to care, and prevents the occurrence of chronic conditions through:
- Collaborative community-driven 20 week program to train community members in mental health literacy, supervised by mental health professionals.
- Individual therapy sessions for high-risk community members.
- An integrative, relevant and accessible mental health website.
The Cope community program is currently delivered by refugee community members in four languages: English, Farsi, Arabic and Somali.
85% of Cope participants report feeling confident enough to facilitate their own Cope group after completing the community program.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF COPE?
Create an ongoing system for identification, access, treatment, referrals, and advocacy to support the mental health needs of asylum seeker and refugee community members in Indonesia.
Provide mental health resources and psychoeducation to all community members, to overcome the need for more intensive treatments after conditions have become chronic.
Develop the capacity of local refugees and professionals to assist individuals experiencing mental illnesses.
Increase access to mental health services through the development of a refugee and asylum seeker-specific self-guided support tool.
Advocate for increased awareness and access to support for refugee populations.
HOW DOES YOUR DONATION HELP?

“After joining the Cope program, I started building trust in other people and being able to share my pain with others… The facilitator suggested that I should give myself some time. I should start loving myself. The Cope group has given me an opportunity to find myself. Today I know that I matter. If I am not okay, I cannot help anyone. If I am okay, at least, I can help one person.” (Cope Program Participant)
