This page provides information for refugees and asylum seekers in Indonesia on how to access Basic Needs assistance and support.

Basic Needs is a community-run program providing singles and families with food/hygiene packages and basic medical care to create healthier communities and prevention of serious illness. Our programs meet immediate basic needs – and respond to emergency needs – to enable safer and healthier lives for those awaiting protection

ARE YOU NEW TO RAIC?

Please note we have an extensive waiting list and are currently at capacity with community members who need immediate assistance. We strive to support as many refugees and asylum seekers as possible and are working to grow this program to include more people on our waiting list. When we have more capacity, it will be announced here and on our social media. Please revisit this page again for future program updates.

We aim to provide all community members with information in your own language and can make an interpreter available if required.

HAVE YOU RECEIVED ASSISTANCE FROM RAIC PREVIOUSLY?

If you are a current member of the Basic Needs program (e.g. you have received assistance in the last 12 months) and have a question, please contact the RAIC WhatsApp and provide your name and ID number.

Frequently Asked Questions
What community groups are prioritised for assistance?

Due to limited funding, we currently prioritise supporting those who are not receiving any other forms of assistance (e.g. family overseas or other services in Indonesia). We also try to provide urgent care to people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, facing chronic or acute medical issues (including mental health concerns), or who are single person households.

What items are commonly included in packages?

The contents of packages vary each month depending on availability, however common items we may include are:

FOOD PACKAGES

HYGIENE PACKAGES

  • Rice
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Oil
  • Tea
  • Chicken
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Pasta

  • toothbrush (every 3 months)
  • toothpaste
  • soap
  • shampoo
  • wet tissue (children below 2 years old)
  • dry tissue
  • towel
  • detergent powder
  • shower sponge (every 3 months)
  • diapers (children below 2 years old)
  • milk powder (children below 3 years old)
  • women’s menstruation essentials/underwear
  • disposable razors (every 2 months)
  • pens/pencils/notebooks (for kids in learning centre)
Can I choose my own items?

All packages are pre-packed before collection with the contents tailored for individuals based on culture, gender, age and special requirements. Requests are listened to and solutions can be identified together. Our program is undertaken by and for members of our refugee community. The Basic Needs team purchases items in bulk and oversees the packing process with the help of community volunteers. Overtime we have built relationships and secured discounts with larger retailers. This ensures we can get the best value for the most people.

How do you distribute packages?

Packages are distributed in bulk across Jakarta and Cisarua/Bogor. Refugee community volunteers from different language groups assist in providing access for their respective communities. For those receiving packages, you will be asked to attend a meeting point each month where you can collect your package while maintaining social distancing.

For anyone unable to collect packages themselves due to disability, illness or other concerns, the community volunteers can discuss making delivery arrangements to your homes as required.

Where else can I go for assistance?

Visit our ‘Other Support Services and Resources’ page for more information on other providers of assistance for refugees in Indonesia.
